I saw a juxtaposed picture today on Twitter.

Hillary in a $12,000 Armani jacket talking about equality and Ivanka in a $100 dress supporting her father.

And I thought, why does anyone in this world need to buy a $12,000 jacket?! Fine. It's your money (or is it?) Then spend it on whatever you want. But don't lecture me on income inequality.

And of course, the woman who wears the $100 dress doesn't lecture us.

eric said...

Oh, and I also thought, they always talk about men compensating for small members when they drive expensive cars.

Is this the female version of that? If you pay $12,000 for a coat, does that compensate for something?

To be fair, Hillary and Ivanka paid about the same on a per fabric yard basis.

A friend once told me RE: clothing style, "You have to be willing to pay more than $50 for a shirt!"

That seemed cold. The shirts at Marshalls and Target rarely top $15.

Btw, Reuters/ipsos has had Clinton at +8, then +9, then +10 twice in a row, then +11, then +13.

Now has her at +4.

Which is weird because Rasmussen which had Trump at +7 now has him at +1.

It does seem like the Democrat approach is to simply accept these attacks as the new normal, for some, unknown, unspoken, undefined greater good.

First response: not all Muslims are bad!
Second response: workplace violence!
Third response: let's enact gun control!
Fourth response: America is too violent!
Fifth response: We cannot precisely ascertain the motive

You were SO right, Professor Althouse. After last night's festival of LGBTQ rights-protection, there can no longer be any doubt. Donald Trump, all along, was "pro gay, and [was] being cagey about it. To the extent that he'd make it a point of emphasis and in defiance of the Republican Platform.

What we now know is how well Trump does "cagey" and "deceptive" and "misleading."

You finally have a major pro-gay Republican candidate to support. Good luck to you.

Facts are hard to come by regarding today's attacks in Munich. If the facts eventually support Islamic terror, Trump's "dark speech" will turn out to be simply a "factual speech".

As has been noted previously on this blog, "events" may decide this election.

Or sometimes "non-events": I believe the police in Cleveland did a magnificent job handling the crowds outside the Republican convention. The police know who is on their side and care a lot about who wins this election. We'll see next week if the Philadelphia police are as motivated as the Cleveland police were.

Well, looks like something is causing #idiotboss some issues this morning.

One thing is certain: ISIS is not JV but the lefties here surely are.

Drago said...

I can't help but notice that our resident lefties don't have much to say about their latest handiwork in Munich involving JV-level, non-islam-related, coordinated-lone-wolf, motive-impossible-to-discern, workplace violence caused by an inanimate object and the NRA.

Remember, acvording to obama the most beautiful sound in the world is the Muslim call to prayer echoing over the rooftops of Munich and Paris and Nice and Orlando etc.

Sprezzatura said...

Drago,

First, of course we must crush radical Muslim terrorists. As they say, kill em all and let God sort it out.

But, I hope cons are shrewdly hyperventilating for some sort of political benefit.

Looking at our population, our current threats are not even a rounding error of a rounding error of a rounding error of WWII losses. And, that was nothing compared to the Civil War. How can we be such massive, scared pussies?

Drago said...

Why, I would bet events of the day might even provide an opening for "lifelong republican" Chuck to meander ever so close to an almost, kinda sorta vague tangential chiding of Hillary.......

I'm sorry, I couldn't quite hear you over the lefty screaming for their college-bound heroes Trayvon and big Mike in addition to the galactic reverberations echoing the gleeful daily casualty reports during Bush's tenure and assigning of blame for Loughner on a couple target graphics from a Palin website.

Thanks for going there.

Drago said...

Why don't those Munich cops just tell the folks to calm down and stop running away from the killers? After all, today's body count from future Democrat immigrants is nothing compared to past conflicts.

And those gay groups talking about Orlando when that's not even a rounding error?

As PB&J would love to tell them, stop being such pusSites!

Thanks #idiotboss!

Scott said...

I absolutely agree that events will drive this election. As for Munich, we don't know much about the shooter(s) yet. It's highly possible that this is the Religion of Peace at work, but it's not definite yet. It's not impossible that we have a lone nut (although where did he get a pistol to go with the voices in the head?), a right winger (granted Munich is where the NSDAP got it's start in the 1920s, but the reports of the shooter committing suicide argue against that), or a criminal hit (although any gang would know that trying a Chicago style hit in downtown Munich WOULD get das Polizei to drop on them like a load of bricks).

TL;DR Let's see what data comes out of this, although my suspicion is this is an Islamist terror attack and the authorities might well try a coverup since they have a track record of doing that (see Cologne rapes).

hombre said...

I saw several links to sites reporting that Hillary and the Dems were hiring trolls to defend her in comment sections on the net.

A few seemed to have landed here. Not that it matters.

Scott said...

Just FYI, here's a link to the Munich PD's twitter account (in German, with French and English translations after each German post and i *think* Turkish).

https://twitter.com/PolizeiMuenchen

Here's what we definitely know. One shooting scene confirmed ATM (others are unconfirmed). Six dead victims, unknown wounded. No one has claimed responsibility (apparently an ISIS-linked Snapchat group says that they are happy (big shock, I know) but they have *not* claimed that it is theirs). No word yet if it's one shooter or multiple. So again, we don't know a lot of key things that would suggest this is another terrorist attack. Yet.

Trying to keep this factual as best I can for this post and avoid speculating without a firm basis in fqact, although early indications certainly make a terror attack likely.

I disagree vehemently with the authors at this site denigrating the 'red orange' Crayon. Why can't it be both? A color found between the colors, like the shifting hue of a delicate unfurled petal. Isn't every color we see just one shade transitioning to another, anyway? The same ocean can be blue AND green...

(Regarding the Crayons: now the 'Macaroni and Cheese' Crayon doesn't seem to be anywhere 'between' Mac and Cheese: it looks solidly on the Cheese side of the plate. Perhaps they were unable to use the name "Velveeta.")

And if all this talk of color and flowers overwhelms you, you can always look at the simple hues of plain old flour. .

We were yakking about Trumps gloomy description of the state of the economy.
I mentioned the population-employment ratio, as the official unemployment rate is, for all practical purposes, useless, as admitted to years ago by all the Fed governors and Ben Bernanke.

To remove all confusions from the effect of long term unemployment and withrawal from the (official) labor force, and the effect of such things as the tacit use of SS disability as long term unemployment compensation or "education" to delay entry in the labor force, the raw total population employment rate is useful. This is simply the number of employed persons vs all adults (persons over 16).

I have posted this before. The chart is telling. It tracks recessions and recoveries extremely well, and is immune to spin. This is the sort of data that is a concrete block to the skull. One would need a cast iron head to fail to get the point.

http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS12300000
Highest ever was 1999-2000, at about 64%
At the last peak, 2006-2007, it was at @63%
It fell to 58.5% late 2009
It has improved only slightly to 59.7% 1Q2016
The last time it was this low was around 1984, but the trend was steeply up at that time, due to the powerful recovery and the continuing process of women entering the (official) labor force.
In one picture this is Donald Trumps economic case.
If he were Ross Perot this would be on a flip chart.

Look it's Citizen Trump demagoguery, designed to frighten the fascist rubes out there.

buwaya said...

The other very telling set of trends is the state of business dynamism.
By that I mean the rate at which new enterprises are formed, and their health and likelihood of survival. There are imperfect measures for this, but there are some useful data series.

The BLS has compiled several here -

http://www.bls.gov/bdm/entrepreneurship/entrepreneurship.htm

Some comments -
1. All these trends should be population-adjusted, and they aren't, which yields an imperfect idea of the trends in the rate. Imagine a progressive downwards skew to get an accurate picture. The data is available in links, so if you have Excel, have at it.
2. Business formation, as units, has powerfully ticked up since 2009-2010, but that is misleading. This seems to be the effect of large numbers of people becoming independent contractors (Obamacare?) and at least officially employing themselves.
3. Employment in new businesses is completely paralyzed, adjusting for population growth it is flat, after, note, a long decline since 1999-2000. The present troubles aren't the result of the policies of one administration but of a long term trend.
4. Last, the last chart, of the increasing trend of employment in larger businesses, and decline of employment in smaller businesses. This is precisely what Schumpeter would have predicted. We can see right here the effect of corporatism.

Funny thing is, Candidate Doom and Gloom is successful because he's managed to imbue a sense of hope in his supporters that is pulling them out of the state of "learned helplessness" they've been in since...forever. The Dems hate their kind, want them to die, and celebrate their predicted demise with great glee. And the GOP cuck candidates had exactly the same attitude. "You aren't the future, you have no future, please fuck off and die and get out of the way."

It's remarkable how often I've seen an expression of hopefulness among Trump supporters, particularly male supporters, young and older. The younger ones have the feistiness, the thumos, proper to young men. (Naturally, the "doom and gloom" pajama-boy candy-asses portray this as inherently violent and negative.) Among older ones it is common to hear things like "I thought this country was dead. I never thought I'd feel hopeful about the future again", or "maybe we don't have to put up with this Orwellian bullshit we live in forever".

The hope and change moves in mysterious ways, bitchez.

While it probably didn't cost $12,000, Ivanka's dress likely cost more than $100. Oh, sure; she'll be happy to sell you a similar dress from her label for $140 at Macy's, but on closer inspection it is not the same dress. They're both pink sheath dresses, but the one Ivanka wore hit the middle of her knees (she's 5'11") and the off-the-rack version hits the average woman several inches above the knee. The detailing is also different, as Ivanka's had a side slit and lacked the beading that is on the front of the Macy's version.

Update from Munich: 8 dead victims, 10 injured. A ninth victim is believed to be one of the shooters with 'up to two more' on the loose. Apparently said dead shooter killed himself after being cornered. State of emergency in place, city in lockdown, federal anti-terrorism police are hunting for 2 more gunmen.

Assuming this is true with multiple shooters, it's almost certainly terrorism, and probably religious/Islamic terrorism (since left/right wing terrorists would be looking at worst at life in jail with the possibility of being freed when the revolution comes). This is doubly true since any right wing fanatics would know that Hitler's rise to power was jump-started when he was put on trial in 1923.

Still all that said, there's some several key pieces of data that we don't have yet. The ID of the presumed corpse is one, clearly if he's Hans Dinkeldorffer would be slightly different than Mohammed al-Jihadi. A second is the number of shooters, more than one blows away the 'lone nut on a rampage' theory out of the water. Hitting a McDonald's may or may not be symbolic of hating USA/the west (which would lean toward left wing/neo-communist/Islamist) or it might be a target of opportunity. It's certainly notable that there's been no creditable claim of credit from the usual Islamic terror groups.

The first McDonalds in Germany was in Munich, in 1971. A huge hit among the US Army. I suspect you'd still pick up some American targets there at any hour.

True, although I was thinking of the fact that McDonald's for better and for worse is seen as a very "American' brand outside the US. Certainly if you hate the USA, it's got more symbolic impact than shooting up a Toyota dealership, although not as symbolic as shooting up an embassy (albeit the embassy is a much MUCH harder target to hit).

As for who is responsible time for wild half-baked speculation from most to least plausible.

#1 Islamic terror. Pros: We have seen this kind of attack before in Paris, San Bernadino, Orlando and so on. McDonalds and downtown shopping mall is a soft target and would have immediate media impact in a major city. Terrorist committing suicide also suggest Islamic/religious motivation (since the only secular folks to really push suicide attacks are the Tamil Tigers). Cons: No creditable claim of responsibility as of yet. While we are looking for two more shooters, this may be in error.

#2 Domestic (right/left wing terror). Pros: McDonalds as noted above is symbolic of the West/greedy capitalism to a lot of neo-communists. This argues more for left-wing terror, note since right-wingers would have more symbolic targets to hit, such as refugee centers. Although it's certainly possible that a RW terrorist could star shooting at 'foreign'/arab families here similar to the ISIS attack in Bangladesh where they killed non-Muslims. Cons: The suicide argues heavily against this since most RW/LW would have their heroes (Hitler, Lenin, etc.) have gone to jail to spread their teachings versus dying for the cause.

#3 Lone nut with a gun. Pros: This is certainly plausible in that you have someone who is mentally ill get a gun ans start shooting at the Lizard People or whatever the voices in his head say. Including turning the gun on himself. Victims, place and so on may be totally random. Cons: How does this person get a handgun, which is very highly regulated and verboten? In addition, if there's more than one shooter, this gets blown out of the water since what are the odds of two+ crazy people getting guns and electing to shoot Ronald McDonald?

#4 Criminal activity. Pros: It's certainly not impossible for a criminal feud to result in a public attack on rival gang members or organized crime figures. In this case, access to guns is a nonissue (probably smuggled from the Balkans). Cons: This is really REALLY bad for business, since it assures you of a very harsh crackdown on the shooter(s) and their associates. Triply so for making the international news, and if you want Don Corleone dead, there's considerably more low-key ways to do it. That don't involve the full wrath of German police dropping on yourself. Even during the height of the historical Mafia struggles (and later drug trade/turf wars), there was an effort to keep bystander casualties down for this reason unless the police are thoroughly in your pocket (see Columbia 1980s, Mexico today). I can;t see the Munich police overlooking this kind of thing.

I wonder if Clinton will attack Germany to carve out another Islamic state in Europe a la Kosovo, or perhaps a wholesale takeover and mass abortion campaign of the native Germans as they carried out in South Africa. Probably not. Merkel seems to entertain the anti-native policies of Obama, Clinton el. and their progressive wars throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and Ukraine.

Anything happen?

Just go back where you were Tank. Apparently the Republicans have nominated the End of Days candidate, and he has a chance to win. We'll let you know if that Clinton woman is able to defeat him. Only then will the planet again be safe for human civilization.

Interesting, Hoodlum, but the sheer volume is a bit overwhelming. Can you suggest some good keywords?

Well, as per the Munich Police we know a little more. 9 dead, 26 injured transported to the hospital. Of those wounded, 3 are in serious condition and 13 more slightly injured but hospitalized. The apparent shooter who killed himself was an 18 year old German-Iranian (Which presumably means his father was Iranian and he was probably born in Germany. Motive and religion are undetermined at this time (officially). Apparently only one shooter. Children were among the casualties.

Here's the statement as run through Google translate. https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=de&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.polizei.bayern.de%2Fmuenchen%2Fnews%2Fpresse%2Faktuell%2Findex.html%2F245253&edit-text=&act=url

It's starting look depressingly like Islamic terror, alas.

"News of Carlson’s firing, and the lawsuit she filed shortly thereafter, have now prompted 25 women to come forward with what they describe as similar harassment claims against Ailes that stretch across five decades back to his days in the 1960s as a young television producer, according to Carlson’s attorney, Nancy Erika Smith.

"Interviews with four of those women portray the 76-year-old television powerhouse as a man who could be routinely crude and inappropriate, ogling young women, commenting about their breasts and legs, and fostering a macho, insensitive culture. Three of the women were speaking about their allegations for the first time, including a 2002 Fox intern who says Ailes grabbed her buttocks, and a Fox employee who says Ailes touched her and tried to kiss her against her will at his office in 2004."

So where are you? And Kudos for being a stoic but if god wanted us to live in a sauna he wouldn't have invented air conditioning.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, disagrees with Obama unless they are full-fledged RACISTS!

Don't think I won't say it again neither, or I just might up and call you racist too. We know the effect on you and your loved ones that could have.

Ha. I believe God did invent air conditioning - it's called dousing yourself with water and walking around. The other kind, man invented, not God. Washington, DC, the capital of the United States (right now, but I've not had further south as well, just not there at the present time).

It was invented by a guy named Dodge.
Every year I make a pilgrimage to his house and hand his grandson a thousand dollars. "Here. This is in memory of your grandfather. The greatest man who ever lived."

True story
My dad passed his drivers license re-examination by virtue of the fact his Chrysler Newport had air conditioning.

I like air conditioning.
I don't care how many dead dinos, atoms or photons are used to make it.
And for the record I love the environment.
I love the environment I created in my home with air conditioning.
My house is now so cold I can't see outside for all the condensation on the windows.
Bite me climate change.

To answer your question @5:38, Rusty, not sure how he got the gun yet. As per Wikipedia and Google, German firearms laws are VERY restrictive (basically unless you have a hunting license, are a member in good standing regular of a shooting club, or are a collector, est ist verboten). Note the above folks can carry one...unloaded in a locked and secured case. Since our attacker was 18, you would have to include a mandatory psych evaluation and a clean criminal record on top of that.

If your definition of 'gun show loophole' is 'out the back of a van on a corner in the bad part of town, cash on carry', then probably, yes.

If I had to guess, the gun was illegal, probably bought on the black market, and possibly smuggled from a *slightly* more lax country in Europe (the Balkans being the likely culprit there).

Scott said...

Link to German firearms laws:

https://www.loc.gov/law/help/firearms-control/germany.php

These are restrictive past anything the US 'guns are bad crowd' have tried to push. Money quote:

Under the reliability criteria, certain criminal records disqualify an applicant, as does membership in a criminal or terrorist organization or the justified suspicion of the authorities that the applicant would abuse the license or not live up to its requirements.[31] Additional disqualifying circumstances are the lack of legal capacity; personal disabilities, such as addiction to alcohol or drugs; mental illness or feeblemindedness; and any other indications that the applicant might not live up to the licensing requirements.

And in addition...

Licensed gun owners are responsible for keeping their weapons under lock and key, and the law provides detailed specifications on the quality of the storage containers; these vary according to the potency of the weapons.[54] Owners must inform the authorities of the safe-storage measures taken as well as allow the authorities to enter their dwellings for the purpose of monitoring compliance with safe-storage regulations.[55]

It appears that such access must be granted without a search warrant, and, even though the German Constitution protects the privacy of the home, access cannot be refused if there is a threat of imminent danger.[56] Random inspections, however, must be expected at any time and without any probable cause or suspicion. This increased right of the authorities to conduct inspections was enacted in 2009 in response to the Winnenden school shooting, and much has been said about the interpretation of this right.

It appears that the authorities may only inspect for compliance with weapons-storage regulations but not conduct any other searches.[57] If the weapon is outside of its container and the owner claims to have been cleaning the weapon, the authorities will have to evaluate this claim.[58] It also appears that a homeowner has the right to refuse entry to the authorities if he or she has a good reason. A homeowner who frequently refuses entry, however, may be violating the statutory duty to cooperate with the authorities on the safe storage of weapons,[59] which may lead to revocation of the license. The far-reaching inspection rights of the authorities aim to ensure that gun owners will have an incentive to keep their guns locked up.[60]
