Why Romney deleted the line "He's a nice guy."

It was a stock line, but it meant something, and it's not something Romney wants to say anymore.
"[Romney] has said Obama's a nice fellow, he's just in over his head," [one campaign] adviser said. "But I think the governor himself believes this latest round of attacks that have impugned his integrity and accused him of being a felon go so far beyond that pale that he's really disappointed. He believes it's time to vet the president. He really hasn't been vetted; McCain didn't do it."

Indeed, facing what the candidate and his aides believe to be a series of surprisingly ruthless, unfounded, and unfair attacks from the Obama campaign on Romney's finances and business record, the Republican's campaign is now prepared to go eye for an eye in an intense, no-holds-barred act of political reprisal, said two Romney advisers who spoke on condition of anonymity. In the next chapter of Boston's pushback — which began last week when they began labeling Obama a "liar" — very little will be off-limits, from the president's youthful drug habit, to his ties to disgraced Chicago politicians.

I used to defend Obama the same way, but Obama is a so down and low in character that Martin Luther King ,Jr is surely rolling over in his grave.

I have a dream that one day, Black Presidents will not be given a pass because of the color of their skin, but will be judged by their character

What took them so long?

And weren't they paying attention to Obama's track record in elections? Didn't they see how his Senate opponents were treated?

It has surprised me how Romney was so aggressive with Newt and Santorum but has allowed Obama to frame the terms of the debate so far.

Neither McCain nor the mass media dominated by liberal and progressive Jewish pundits, producers, and string pullers vetted the guy.

Some fertile ground exists.

1. What was his academic record. How did a Choom Gang member who was a "lackadaisical student" get Ivy League, then Harvard Law?

2. Why was Obama the only "Law lecturer" kept on after 2 years at any law school...and why was he the only one promoted to permanent "Senior law lecturer" in the whole country when that spot is reserved for 1-2 years for guest jobs for retired high prestige judges, senior law firm partners, those with critical academic contributions in a field of law, or visiting law professors???

3. What was the role of the billionaire Crown, Pritzker, and Klutznik families that run U of Chicagos Board of Trustees and who have huge influence in the Daily Machine getting Barack and Michelle cushy, light work, not intellectually challenging sinecures??

4. How many jobs has Jeffrey Immelt, head of Obama's jobs and economic advisory committee - sent to China under Obama?

5. What did Obama mean off-Mic about how he would do the things Russia, China, and other countries wanted once he was reelected.

mccullough said...

The theme of Romney's election should be that Obama is incompetent and in over his head because has not had to work hard to get where he is. This is also why Obama has no idea what he is doing and why he thinks individual effort is over-rated.

He's the President of the United States and innocent people have died as a result of the incompetence of his Justice Department. That is the story, and for the liberal media to ignore it is appalling. I only wish Obama was a Republican so the Washington Post would be hounding him for the truth. Again, I will be glad to share my tax returns. I've committed no crime and I'm not covering up anything. What is the Obama administration covering up? Show those docoments and I will release any tax records he wants to see."

Four years ago it might have been good to know more about Obama's college record, but now nobody gives a sh*t about that. Romney would lose traction by talking about it. Ties to corrupt Chicago politicians are relevant only to the extent that they relate to Obama's crony capitalism -- and don't we have enough information about that subject that we don't have to delve into the past? Until after Labor Day (at the earliest) this is all inside baseball, nobody but us politics junkies is paying attention. And it's the undecided voters that decide elections. Conservative radio host pressures Romney, then mocks him for caving

"When word got around that Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney had appointed an openly gay man as his Foreign Policy and National Security Spokesman, unrelenting criticism from the right soon forced the Romney campaign to let him go.

Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association was among the most prominent of those critics, suggesting that Richard Grenell’s lifestyle could make him a security risk. But having gotten his way, Fischer is now milkng Romney’s haste to accomodate the religious right as a source of doubts about the candidate’s backbone.

“If Mitt Romney can be pushed around, intimidated, coerced, coopted by a conservative radio talk show host in Middle America,” Fischer asked, “then how is he going to stand up to the Chinese, how is he going to stand up to Putin, how is he going to stand up to North Korea, if he can be pushed around by a yokel like me?”

“I don’t think Romney’s realizing kind of the doubts that this begins to raise about his leadership,” he added.

He'd do much better to employ Clinton-style attack surrogates. Not only does this allow the candidate to appear above the fray, it also defuses the so-called fact-checkers, who won't bother to deal with accusations made by congressmen and pundits.

Unfortunately, by announcing that he'll be attacking the President, he's pretty much undermined much of the benefit from surrogates.

Most of the things I mentioned are matters that bear on Obama (and Michelles) competency, their intellectual and work product before he became President.

If I was on Romney's oppo research staff..I would be digging deep with contact with the U of Chicago Law Faculty, active and retired.

Rumors exist that there are U of Chicago Faculty that are pretty down on Obama as getting Special Treatment from the Trustees for 20 years.
That he never published anything, he never reviewed colleagues work, he avoided conversations with professors on law matters. That he only showed up to give 2 one-hour Constitutional Law lectures to two cohorts at the law school twice a week and was never tasked with other duties.

That his intellectual capacity and education and work experience to give the school and students a quality product beyond some dazzling speeches and bull shooting sessions...was seriously questioned.

That Obama was taken in with the understanding he would publish legal papers when his "Dreams of My Father" book deal was done...and go on the tenure track. That it soon became apparant that despite many influential mentors - that Obama did not have the knowledge or drive to hard work that would give him a shot at tenure.
But his mentors saw him as politically valuable, someone worth cultivating that needed a job - so the temporary law lecturer spot - against all tradition - became a light work sinecure for Barack - alone at law school faculties in this.

And once the Crowns and Pritzkers ensconced him, Barak lost any interest in publishing a single academic paper, or doing any other academic work, even learning a subject outside "Constitutional Law" so they could have him do more than play basketball and do 2 courses a week..

That Michelle Obama was at best a part-time Admin exec with no real executive duties.

That Barack through his patronage, took up lecturer spots that belonged to new and fresh U of Chicago grads, or the senior lecturer spot that should have gone to a succession of VIP temporary Faculty who had distinguished themselves in the law profession or as professors at other universities.

Yes, exactly. It's exceedingly lame to attack Obama's secrecy over his college transcripts. Who gives a damn? He has a record now!

And I think secretive attacks from secret assassins is horseshit. Mitt Romney better man up. You can be a happy warrior. But fight back!

The press wants to see your tax returns. The appropriate response to that is to remind the press of the secrecy and cover-up that the Obama administration is doing right now. Tie the two issues together. You can do that and still be nice. You don't have to go all Newt on them. But you can and should use this issue to highlight some problems with the Obama administration. And force the media to cover an issue they don't want to talk about. Jujitsu!

That's not going to work. He's being hit on his secrecy about his taxes and his great wealth. Having "surrogates" attack Obama is bullshit. Particularly if the media doesn't give a rat's ass. Which they won't.

What he needs to do is have an answer for the specific (implicit) charge. The implicit charge is that he is not sharing his tax returns because he's secretive, and maybe a felon, and very rich, and blah blah blah.

The response to that is to say that you have nothing to hide, and you'd be glad to share your tax returns.

As soon as the Obama administration shares all the Fast and Furious documents with the Republicans in Congress.

The press has to report on that. They can't avoid it. Which bounces the subject right back to Obama and his secrecy.

Deal with the problem. Trying to keep Mitt "nice" while surrogates use daggers is bullshit and lame and a failure waiting to happen. Deal with the fucking problem!

2) On point: bullshit. Anyone of voting age with an IQ of 95 or better could have figured out Obama was exactly what he proved to be: the least experienced person ever nominated by a major political party for president; ideologically a significant outlier from the American mainstream, who was thus doomed to fail.

It was like predicting the outcome of giving a 16 year old boy the keys to a corvette and a bottle of Southern Comfort: you could have measured him for the casket as you did so.

Stop giving the idiots a pass for voting for this twit; it was just about the most obvious thing ever, and blaming the media or John McCain or Space Aliens or your used toilet paper for failing to vet Obama is just a world-class, chicken-shit cop-out.

If Barbara Tuchman was still alive, she could add a new chapter to her book, "The March of Folly," on all the idiots who suspended any sense of critical judgment and disbelief to delude themselves into believing this affirmative action beneficiary would somehow, against all known experience and reason, be able to perform as president.

It was never going to happen, and it was entirely predictable.

What they haven't figured out is that this isn't an existential threat--doing away with them--it's about curtailing their monopoly.

Let's be honest: Romney could have started the Teletubbies franchise and the Left would still feign indignation. Bain, decorative soaps, edible panties, it doesn't matter. Their anger is so forced and insincere it makes even Romney's public persona seem half-believable.

Then there's Obama. Fuck him. I hate seeing his stupid wife all over cnet.com asking me to tell "Barack" that "I'm in!" I hate how the media coddles him. The ethics violation in question occurred after Gingrich taught a course at Kennesaw State College. While organizers claimed the course qualified for tax-exempt status, the House Ethics Committee ultimately decided the course was run to "help in achieving a partisan, political goal,” making it ineligible for tax exemption, according to PolitiFact.

That's the thing - you can't know.

You can't accept their word for anything - for instance, Romney got the cult's permission to back abortion even though it goes against Mormon doctrine, simply because the power-hungry snipes wanted him to win.

And when you follow as many cults as I do, and discover the extent their outlandish ideas take them, it's just easier to know how to spot them so you can shun them out of hand. Another for instance:

Remember Samantha Brick? The average-looking English chick who recently declared herself too beautiful to have female friends? Everybody immediately said she was nuts and thought nothing more of it. Until today, when she admitted she was once in the pedophile Sathya Sai Baba cult - now her delusional nature makes sense.

The same goes for Arianna Huffington, who is also prone to making outlandish, nonsensical, and hypocritical statements. That crazy bitch Obama supporter (who Ann is always trying to puff up as a feminist icon because - wait for it - she stirs things up!) was in the murderous Rajneesh cult. Mr. Adultery himself, Brad Pitt - who I've been following as a fruitcake for years - dabbled in Scientology. And so on.

See? I don't label everything a cult or cultist. But once you know them - and what to look for - they're so easy to spot you'd think they were wrapped in neon.

But you can never predict what they'll do - the outlines maybe - but, ultimately, no.

Except it'll somehow be bad.

Mitt Romney and the Mormons?

My guess is - if he doesn't implode before taking office - you can prepare yourself for an eventual constitutional crisis of such epic magnitude, that "spiritual" clusterfuck will make Watergate look like a 5-year old's day at DisneyWorld.

As long as it doesn't become our usual spitting match, sure:

You're going by the Frank Zappa rule - that the difference between a religion and a cult is it's size - but the truth is cult's have defining characteristics, starting with a con man leader, a wacky belief system, something nonsensical they're selling, etc.

So as not to confuse the issue, let's get away from so-called religion-based cults, and look at cults based on quackery:

Here's my example surrounding the practice of Homeopathy.

And here's my example surrounding the practice of Reiki.

To answer the latter part of your question requires a clarification:

I am NOT anti-religion, per se, and definitely not a true bigot as I've been portrayed. I see religion as outdated, but I am a realist. I have Christian friends, Mormon friends - shit, one of my best friends is a college professor who teaches Buddhist thought. (He and I will talk for hours and, man, do we LAUGH!) My evidence is my past with everyone here, knowing I enthusiastically backed Sarah Palin and Rick Santorum for president.

Why?

Because, believers or not, though HOW they said something may have been couched in religious language, WHAT they said didn't conflict with reality. (Rick Santorum's later pronouncements in the campaign were found to have been sound, even though he was ridiculed - by others, not me - for speaking as a Catholic.) Keeping reality in check was enough for me, knowing how religious my country is, and it's all I - as an atheist - ask in return. Long story-short:

Being religious, in my view, doesn't disqualify anyone for office - being crazy does.

And Mitt Romney - with his "Jesus will rule from Missouri" bullshit - is most-definitely crazy.

Yes, I think we have examples from Chicago as to what happens when a white opponent digs in his heels and goes tit for tat. The surrogates charge racism. In this case, the entire lamestream media will be there to back up team Obama on the racism charges. Tingles Matthews is already there.
But wait a minute. Polls show that the American people are fed up with media lies and distortions.
So this will be interesting.

I'm sure you really believe that. That's where your absolute assurance that you're right comes in. It's not unlike a religion actually except it's not a supreme being it's yourself.

Oh, stop it. Rush Limbaugh has made the point, many times, that if there's one thing people in this NewAge, "be humble," everybody-gets-a-trophy, feminist culture can't handle, it's a man who's sure of himself, because we put the lie to everything you've been taught:

That some people are smarter, or better, without it automatically meaning we think we're more-than. That reality exists, and can be known. That there's ways to think that you haven't grasped yet.

This you've-replaced-God-with-yourself BS (along with the charge I - an anti-cultist - want to start a cult of my own) is a perfect example of such a slow-witted approach to me it boggles my mind. Don't you hear ANYTHING I'm saying?

All I know I'm right about, in the context of this thread, is Mormonism is a dangerous cult to our country. It's based on a very sick con man's "teachings" - you can't argue that. It practices multiple cons - most of which you have no clue about. It has been our enemy for over a century - thas historical fact, on many fronts, and with lots of blood spilled and lies told. And it looks down on the rest of us behind closed doors - a fact they'll keep hidden as much as possible, though you can clearly hear it in their pronouncements, if you know how to listen. That's it - that's what I know. Not "believe" but KNOW.

One more thing:

When I was very young, I told a lie to my foster mother and her dear friend to cover up something I had done. It was eventually discovered after her friend spent a lot of money unnecessarily. I felt like shit - mostly because they didn't punish me but let me stew in my shame. That lesson scarred me - just as cultism has - and I have never seen a reason in ever repeating that scenario again. Today, liars confound me, when I don't automatically see them as profoundly stupid.

I'm not like everyone else - I know that.

I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't make the mistake again,...

Six years later I was almost out of the red and back in the black when the market crashed again and the value of my portfolio dropped by 50%

You are claiming that your portfolio lost more than half its value when Bush was in office. If true, your investments substantially underperformed the market -- the DJIA bottomed out, post-housing crash, at 37% down from what it was when Bush took office.

Also, if by "out of the red" you mean "back at or above the value when Bush took office", the DJIA was "out of the red" in 2004. If it took you until 2008 you were making bad investments.

Being religious, in my view, doesn't disqualify anyone for office - being crazy does.

right, but you're arguing that it's a Mormons beliefs themselves that make them crazy. One could make the argument that some of Christians beliefs would make THEM crazy (or Jews, or Muslims).
I certainly don't agree with Mormonism as a belief system, but Romney doesn't strike me as crazy.he strikes me more as a square. Because what one believes as the source of life and existence, can't be proven by me or you anyway, it largely dowsnt matter to me, but most people can get by and be functional at the same time anyway. What kind of mormon is he? A guy trying to spread Mormonism all around the country and get everyone to be a Mormon on pain of imprisonment or is out there pushing polygamy? Not in my mind. Democrats can't even really make the argument that he's an extremist as a conservative, since he's such a moderate. You can hate him for that, but not based on some trai he's never exhibited in all the time he's been in the public eye.

Romney has run companies ran the olympics and run a state, and his Mormonism never got in the way, nor did he veer into some crazy cultism during all of that time. There's no crazy there.

As for cults, I can certainly see some of your points. In many cases, cults actively brainwash people in unhealthy ways. But some of what you say is cultish, strikes me as largely benign. Like meditation and yoga. Some people could use a bit of meditation frankly (try t you might like it) and much of it is simply a means to self actualitize and focus. The worst that can be argued is that you waste your time and money on something that doesn't work. But I don't see many people who are into yoga somehow telling other people taking yoga to drink kool aid laced with poison.

Take a Tom cruise. Now, I do think that dianetics is in fact a cult, but I'll also argue that he's focused his life in such a way that he's become one of the most successful people in the world. Not at marriage for sure, but in his career. So maybe some of what scientologists teaches is actually positive. I still wouldn't beome a scientologist, but if I were making a movie and I could afford him, I might hire him.

Now, you take a jimmy jones or david koresh scenario, and there you have a more destructive cult that leads to people's deaths. But what do I care if scientologists think they are aliensas long as they aren't trying to force me to their belief system . It's certainly stupid, but is largely their own choice. So long as they don't make me drink the kool aid, I could care less what they personally think. Hell, I think a lot of Darwinism is just as crazy.

Long story short. Romney may be part of a religion that is kooky, but that doesn't mean he's a nut. Judge him by his actions, not by some notion of what you think Mormonism represents.

Crack, the problem with your anti-Mormon jihad is that, relative to all else going on with the world, you are distracting yourself from things that really matter.

Is the "New Age" thing a load of shit?

Sure; even, if not most especially, the atheistic parts.

Is "cultism" a problem?

No doubt. I know people affected by Jim Jones and the People's Temple. These are people for whom the expression "drank the Kool-ade" is no joke, but a reminder of someone close to them who died.

Are there cults masquerading as religions?

Sure; just ask any former Scientologist.

Is it fair, even from the perspective of a non-believer, to label all religions cults?

No, unless one is an extremist - but then, that can surely become its own cult, can’t it?

Are there elements of Mormonism that indicate it's a cult?

From certain perspectives, especially from those of a non-believer, quite possibly so.

Are these cult-like aspects indications of something more dangerous than other, more common religions? Even those most hostile to Mormonism would be hard-pressed to make that case.

You haven't.

In fact, if one flips the question around, and asks, "gee, which is the most benign cult of all...?," I'm guessing many who view Mormonism as a cult would nominate it over any other (certainly many other) suspected cults.

But here are the real problems your jihad presents:

1) Your "boy who cried wolf" stance toward Mormonism, given everything we know and can see about Mormonism, trivializes the threats posed, and damages done, by more pernicious cults, e.g., Scientology, to take just one example.

2) The unproven but oft-repeated assumption that somehow, despite a lack of evidence beyond a link to your own blog, that Romney is just a puppet (just like Reid is a puppet?), of the hidden Mormon power cabal is a rank conspiracy theory that can never be disproven.

3) The notion that the unproven, here-to-fore baseless fears of Romney’s Mormonism, is somehow a greater threat to the nation's future than the ongoing damages resulting from the incumbent is just risible. Unless you think Mormon underwear *really* does have superpowers.

It demonstrates that your thinking is clouded by ghosts of unrealized fears while, before your very eyes, the nation's house blazes in a conflagration of unsustainable debt fueled by high-grade narcissism in the hands of an affirmative action amateur.

So, you will excuse me for disregarding your rants. They are not serious.

You are not persuading us with logic, you just keep hammering on the same charge which is way past boring. You are not persuasive so you turn people off and destroy your credibility.

Who are we going to believe, you or our lying eyes? We've known plenty of Mormons, they are great people, a cut above most of the people in this country. They are hard workers with great families and values.

In terms of character and religion between Obama and Mitt, Mitt is far preferable. Obama went to church for two decades where the preacher in the pulpit was virulently racist against whites and anti-American. The Mormons love America and don't seem to be any more racist than the average American.

There are two guys running for prez. One is a lying lefty dumb ass who has been ruining the country for four years. Romney is the other guy. The country will be much better off if Romney is elected. It is extremely counter productive for a conservative to be attacking Romney on religious grounds at this point in the election cycle.

I don't think that obamanism is actually a cult, but it was certainly pitched in a way that a cult leader would, and the media certainly covered up his faults to push his agenda.
You really. Et the sense that a lot of dems really drank the kool aid after Obama was elected. You're not going to see conservatives weeping and singing kumbaya, as if electing Romney will bring about a utopia. No, it will simply bring about a lessening of the misery.

I never get that impression from Romney, thathe somehow views himself as a savior of sorts and is candidacy has not been pitched that way at all.

A square who - as a Mormon bishop - has baptized others, after death, against their wishes. Who has run a bogus supplement company and allowed his Mormon brethren (Orrin Hatch) to skew the laws so no one can interfere. Whose church lied to the people of SLC to snatch the best land downtown - claiming to build a park - and then plopped their biggest temple on top of it (again, with the "help" of Senator Hatch) where they now declare everyone else is unfit and chase them away at will.

Mitt Romney is part-and-parcel of all that - he condones all of it, and more, daring anyone to call him on it. Why no one will is a mystery. Is that "wholesome" behavior?

Romney has run companies ran the olympics and run a state, and his Mormonism never got in the way, nor did he veer into some crazy cultism during all of that time. There's no crazy there.

His company (Bain) was his - and run by fellow Mormons. The Olympics were plagued by a bribery and doping scandal (supplements again) but that doesn't fit the "successful" narrative so - again - nobody brings it up. His state is broke, specifically, because of RomneyCare. He got "permission" from his "church" to flip-flop on abortion while governor.

You're seeing what you want to see - AKA the media narrative.

Sigh. This gets old. There are "open" cults and "closed" cults - and they have different techniques based on their orientation. Meditation and yoga are the two prime tools used by cults to fish for new recruits. I ask you:

If the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was a fraud, how can his technique be real? And, if yoga is a 5,000 year old spiritual practice for (as you put it) "self actualization" - a nonsense term - why is it now fraudulently marketed as "exercise" today?

Again - you're buying a media narrative and not looking at the (rarely discussed) facts.

Cont'd.

Another media narrative - I'd wonder about this propensity for swallowing kool-aid if I were you. I'll pass on mentioning the similarities between the "cult" of Scientology and the "religion" of Mormonism, though I consider it low-hanging fruit, and merely point out Tom Cruise wouldn't be where he is without Scientology's "Project Celebrity". You'd do well to read about director Paul Haggis instead.

Now, you take a jimmy jones scenario, and there you have a more destructive cult that leads to people's deaths. But what do I care if scientologists think they are aliens . It's certainly stupid, but is largely their own choice. So long as they don't make me drink the kool aid, I could care less what they personally think. Fine - think that way. (Anti-cultists call you a "shruggie") But remember, you're allowing this to keep happening all around you. And please take notice of the others in the piece:

The names,…n San Francisco, it was [former mayor] Willie Brown, gay icon Harvey Milk and then-Mayor George Moscone, who named Jones to the Housing Authority. In Oakland,…former mayor and…Attorney General [now california Governor] Jerry Brown, Mayor Ron Dellums and U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee. There were plenty of others,….

Sending sheep to the slaughter with their inaction - and political manipulations.

Long story short. Romney may be part of a religion that is kooky, but that doesn't mean he's a nut. Judge him by his actions, not by some notion of what you think Mormonism represents.

because you can be a fraud as a spiritualist but that doesn't mean that everything you preach is in act fraudulent. yoga works as excercise today, because it's good excercise, as is tai chi, which I'm sure you also view with the same degree of fear.
The vast of majority of people taking yoga could get all the benefit from the physical side and not believe one whit about the spiritual aspect. All the martial arts have some of that same spiritual mumbo jumbo, but you also learn how to fight, and how to discipline yourself (self actualization) and even, with some of that mediitation, how to clear your minds of tension.
If jack lallane did his workouts and talked about god while body building, I might ignore all he had to say about god, but if he knows how to do a squat and is the best teacher on how to do squats, and im trying to learn how to do a squat, then he is the go to source.

Unknown said...

"If the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was a fraud, how can his technique be real?"

I'll explain it to you, not that it'll do you any good.

MMY was a "fraud" in the sense that he branded a preexisting system making false claims.

Mantra Meditation - a relaxation technique, basically - existed before him, he took the idea, claimed only certain mantras were effective - each individually administered at a TM Center for big bucks and built a cult.

He's a fraud in the sense suckering people to pay for something that's essentially free. Not in the sense that the technique has zero value.

Jesus, man, if you're ignorant of Mormons - and how they operate - then why do any of you doubt others who do? Mitt Romney - the flip-flopper - has never proven himself above lying.

I will not trust him now.

what have you proven by way of Romney? Nothing you've argued applies to Romney at all. Where I can show EVIDENCE of how he's run companies and govt and not been this cazy cultish figure you keep making scare stories up about.
The worst you've come up with is that he opened a vitamin company. C'mon, subversion - if I hear Romney say something like "coffee prices will necessarily skyrocket" I'll start to worry.

No, I'm claiming that my portfolio lost nearly half its value twice in the eight years Bush was in office. I don't blame Bush for the tech bubble. That was anticipated while he was still running against Gore. The real estate fiasco clearly came on the Bush watch. I made two lump sum investments, one in 1999, the other in 2005, and also dollar cost averaged steadily for the past dozen years, so nearly half of the total invested took advantage of market bottom prices. Until the end of 2010 those investments would have done better stuffed in a mattress.

Look at where the Dow and the Nasdaq stood on the day Obama took office. Compare those averages to where they stand now. I've gotten so much better at investing in the past three and a half years.
