2 clouds with the same number.

I'm watching those right now as a consequence of a conversation I started on Facebook, which began:
I'm thinking of the old Rolling Stones song "Get Off of My Cloud," because I'm aware of my own instinct to step on the clouds of others. Even though you can't step on a cloud. I'm cynical re clouds. Joni Mitchell sang "Clouds got in my way." No, they didn't. But if you'd like to say I need to stop thinking about all those songs from the 1960s, get off of my cloud.
Pick a cloud.

Ryan: The only thing I really care about is that... ...aside from the married thing and the jail thing... ...is the boat thing.

Hanks: What boat thing?

Ryan: I could never be with someone who had a boat.

Hanks: I have a boat.

Ryan: Oh.

Hanks: Which clinches it. We'll never be together.

Hanks: I could never be with someone who likes Joni Mitchell. It's cloud's illusions I recall I really don't know clouds at all What does that mean? Is she a pilot? It must be a metaphor, but I don't know what it is.

Speaking of songs with the same name, I remember in the early 90s 3 songs named "Creep" charted. The one from Radiohead came out in '92, the one from Stone Temple Pilots came out '93 or '94, and the one from TLC came out in '94.

Chris Cornell did an acoustic cover U2's "One" with the lyrics of Metallica's "One".

Oh, my. I had forgotten this verse in "Up, Up and Away":

Suspended under a twilight canopy
We'll search the clouds for a star to guide us
If by some chance you find yourself loving me
We'll find a cloud to hid us, keep the moon beside us

Love is waiting there in my beautiful balloon
Way up in the air in my beautiful balloon
If you'll hold my hand we'll chase your dream across the sky
For we can fly, we can fly
Up, up and away
My beautiful, my beautiful balloon

It's clowns' illusions I recall. Apparently I need to clean out my ears.

The 45 flip side of the Stones' "Get Off My cloud" was "Last Time".

"And then, in dreaming,
The clouds methought
would open and show riches
Ready to drop upon me,
that when I waked
I cried to dream again.”

I blame my dad. Mortarman. Still threatens to attack me. If I do not watch Soupy Sales, listen to Wolfman Jack, and sing, "Bongo, Bongo, Bongo, I don't want to leave the Congo," with him. Abusive bastard.

Pop had seen stuff. Unlike Wernher, who didn’t care where the rockets came down out of the clouds, Pop got walk on earth and see some stuff his mortars did. Though not using them could have been worse. Pop wants me to get the meaning of “Bongo, Bongo, Bongo.” And dream. In the clouds. Riches in the clouds of dreams.

Caliban, methinks, was lost because he sought to dominate, possess, own, control his petty fiefdom island - “I must eat my dinner, This island’s mine, by Sycorax my mother, Which thou takest from me.” He would rape dreamy Miranda. “Oh ho, oh ho! Would ’t [rape] had been done! Thou didst prevent me. I had peopled else, this isle with Calibans!” That was his dream. Below the clouds.

Would that he might, just might, have closed his eyes, let the clouds open wide, ready to “show riches,” and stay in those clouds just long enough ....

People voting for Joni Mitchell over the Stones? Talk about grabbing them by their pussy.

I like the Scottish joke with the punchline "Hey, McLeod, get off of my ewe."

"But if you'd like to say I need to stop thinking about all those songs from the 1960s, get off of my cloud." Far be it from me to tell you what to think about . . .

But the 1860s, now that was a musical decade. Die Meistersinger, Macbeth, Ein Deutsches Requiem, Bruckner's first. Wow. Not by any means the top decade of the century--that would be the nineteenth century, for us not-elitist-but-elite hillbillies, who heard things go downhill after, oh, maybe Mahler or Sibelius--but pretty good.

I would have voted for Tony Bennett's 1955 concept album, "Cloud 7."

You don't like Puccini?

The story I heard was that at the opening of Turandot, the conductor Toscanini stopped 2/3rds through and left the stage. "The Maestro stopped here," he announced. That was ~1926.

I am as escapist as the rest when it comes to songs and lyrics, so to me the Temptations is the best hands down. The others are all iterations of complaints or observations but Cloud 9 is more "inviting" in its sound and lyrics.

from seventh heaven to cloud nine is an elevator ride with Aerosmith.

"You don't like Puccini?" Didn't mean to say I didn't like any post-Jean work, but: no, not as much. Tapiola takes us to 1926, so I'm covered anyway :).

Puccini's Smiling Teeth Pizza is the best in the Midwest.

Meanwhile, back to clouds - Carly Simon had clouds in her coffee in "Your So Vain," and I would guess that cloudy coffee is available at Puccinis.

The lyrics are about how horrible life is and taking drugs as an obviously inadvisable solution.

-----------------------

The childhood part of my life wasn't very pretty
You see, I was born and raised in the slums of the city
It was a one room shack that slept ten other children beside me
We hardly had enough food or room to sleep
It was hard times
Needed something to ease my troubled mind
My father didn't know the meaning of the word
He disrespected Mama and treated us like dirt
I left home seeking a job that I never did find
Depressed and down-hearted, I took to Cloud 9
I'm doing (fine)
Up here (on cloud nine)...
Listen, one more time
I'm doing (fine)
Up here (on cloud nine)...
You can be what you wanna be
You ain't got no responsibility
Every man in his mind is free
You're a million miles from reality...

True. Joni Mitchell wrote the song. Both of them recorded it, and Judy Collins' version was the one that became the big hit.

Re: The Temptations

"A million miles from reality" seems like a bad solution to us mainstreamers, but I think you can very easily interpret the Temptations as presenting it as the most desirable choice of bad alternatives. You have to consider what "the reality" is for the escapee.

There are nine circles of hell, though. Spend all your time getting to the highest of worldly pleasures (cloud nine), and see where you wind up, eh?
