I'm very sorry that I assumed the captain of the Chinese river ferry had made some sort of egregious mistake. The latest information is that they encountered a "freak tornado."

That'll do it.

This article gives me the creeps. But curious to see what Meade and YoungHegelian will say. Incidentally, my colleague sent a pic of a rat snake climbing the outside wall of her home last week. I knew they were climbers but the side of a two-storey house? Maybe it was the brick.

I question whether the U.S. ought to be "fighting ISIS" in Iraq.
Iran/Shia Iraq, ISIS, and Assad's Syria all are our enemies.
It may be tough on the bedouin Iraqi, but Obama is not going back in under any circumstances. It looks like his strategy is to slowly lose to everybody. You have to ask him why and what he is looking to achieve with it.

I think that at the end of Obama's term we will have three expansionist empires pressing on their neighbors, and said neighbors and others will be forming regional alliances for protection since they no longer trust the U.S. and "Pax Americana" to have either the will or the ability to keep the peace.

I think the next president - I hope it is a Republican - is going to have to carefully think through and assess the situation at that time and decide how to rebuild America's position in the world, what nations to try to work with and which to let go, etc., and patiently work toward achieving the eventual goals decided on.

And as Scott Walker says - even though he has not so far done it in AA's opinion - he needs to set forth and explain the whole deal to us in words we can understand.

The slogan "Ziggin’ Zaggin" will be removed from Pittsburgh area buses. Why? Because someone complained when they saw the slogan in their rear view mirror (ie backwards).

The slogans have been on the buses since 2003.

Two years ago I was at a house, roughly $1.5M, incredible view of the Rocky Mountains yet close to Denver, and a *^*&(%%^% rattlesnake was in the backyard.

Baby.

Two people were there from WY and asked me if they could kill it.

I said no; insurance reasons. We ain't no damn rattler killers.

They responded, the WY fellas, that baby rattlers are the most dangerous, will keep biting you and biting you and biting you (whereas presumably older rattlers "learn" to bite once and GTFO) 'cause they are scarred.

I tell the homeowner; they look; it's now LITERALLY CLIMBING THE WALK-OUT BASEMENT FAUX-ROCK VIA A CORNER OF THEIR GORGEOUS HIGH-END-EVERYTHING HOME.

They call animal control who says "call an exterminator" which is cool, but the Animal Control Guy From The City only did that after He drove out to the property, surveyed the situation, and looked the spooked homeowner in the eye.

I had to go back the next day to ensure 100% satisfaction milieu-wise, and the DAMN NEIGHBOR NEXT DOOR CONFRONTS ME AND BRAGS HOW HE WOULD KILL THE RATTLERS AND GO TO JAIL(!!!) BECAUSE HE KNOWS IT AIN'T RIGHT TO FIRE IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS MUCH LESS ONES LIKE THIS.

@pm317,

In the 35 years I have lived in suburban MD, I have never heard of such an infestation in a home. For many years, we provided computer support to a pest control company (not the one in the article), and while I heard stories about a pest control guy finding a snake or two in crawlspace, I never heard about an infestation like that. The exterminators, when they found a snake, were not so worried about the snake. They were worried about what was it eating.

A local pest company, Home Paramount, said the infestation was unlike anything they had seen.

Clearly, Paramount agrees with me.

Something is missing from the article. When you have a nest of snakes like that, there's got to be a major food source nearby. What was it? Were they near the bay? Did a neighbor have an ill-kept compost pile? How were the snakes getting in & out of the house so easily? They might nest inside, but they're feeding outside, so they needed ready access (a snake door instead of a doggy door?). Needless to say, the Paramount exterminator probably knew more about this than I do, and yet they made no headway against the problem. But, something about this story isn't sitting right with me.

Have you noticed the cost of health care services increasing lately, and the quality of services decreasing?

Sorry, but you must understand that you are not the customer. You are just a conduit through which the practitioner gets paid by the Federal Government. You may have some co-pay and/or deductible (and you may "pay" hours waiting) but the Federal Government is by far the largest paying customer.

Federal medicine may not be what you want, may not be what most tax paying citizens want, nor even what most voters want. Federal medicine is what the political class, the elected representatives of the voters, want.

If you don't like federal medicine, then you should elect representatives who can reasonably be expected to reduce the size and scope of the Federal Government. (Hint: they might come from a party other than Republican or Democrat.)

@YoungHegelian

Agree with you that something is missing. They are probably near water with a food source inside/outside the house and the foundation or the basement is compromised (as one commenter on the article put it). So practically the house was sitting on a snake pit. The new owners bought the house in the winter months. Did the old owner live there before or was it vacant? The article is incomplete.

Robert Cook said...

Hammond Gritzkofe, please explain how the rising costs and decreasing quality of health care services is a result of "Federal medicine." Aside from the elderly on Medicare and the indigent on Medicaid, for most Americans who have health insurance it is provided either by their employers, or purchased by themselves. In either case, these are private for-profit insurance companies. Likewise, most doctors and hospitals are private providers seeing private customers (patients), and billing the patients' private insurers for payment.

Of course, many Americans forego health insurance--and regular doctor visits--as they cannot afford it.

Obamneycare claimed to address this problem by requiring (by law) that private citizens buy private health insurance; to facilitate this, it encourages/induces/requires private health insurers to provide "affordable" health care products and forbids the prohibition against selling health insurance to those with "pre-existing conditions," (e.g., the would-be sucke--er, customer had a cold or a sprained ankle at one time in his or life).

To the extent Obamneycare has led to previously uninsured (and uninsurable) Americans to obtaining health insurance, it is better than nothing, (i.e., better than before). However, in that it keeps for-profit health insurers as the essential component of the health delivery system, it solves nothing. The insurers will continue to increase their prices, will still decide what procedures they will not cover, and will continue to find ways to take (ever more of) their customers' money and run.

Hagar said...

I read that if the Supremes declare the Obamacare act to read as it reads, the Republican leadership in Congress is plotting to pass a law repealing that provision.

Personally, I do not care, since I do not intend to have anything to do with Obamacare under any circumstances regardless, but as far as the Republican Party is concerned, I think I will go to bed and pull the covers over my head.

How are these rising prices the result of "Federal Medicine?" Health care services are provided by private vendors.

AHCA is not about insurance, but about the Government forcing both doctors and patients to participate in a pre-paid health services for all scheme.

I have no wish to participate in that, nor can I afford it.

Hagar said...

And the doctors - especially those in Family Practice or Primary Care - seem to be of the same sentiment.

Hammond X. Gritzkofe said...

Exactly my point. You (the Dude sitting on the examining table) are not the customer. The Federal Government as a direct or indirect payer has a corner on the market for medical services. The customer of the medical services - the outfit that pays the bills - is the Federal Government.

If you ain't paying for it, you ain't the customer; your role is just to be a presence in the examining room.
