Gary Oldman can't stop apologizing for that Playboy interview he did where he kept denouncing political correctness.

Hmm.

I read the interview. It wasn't such a big deal. Was this all a set-up to get publicity?
I just think political correctness is crap. That’s what I think about it. I think it’s like, take a fucking joke. Get over it....
Apparently not!
We all hide and try to be so politically correct. That’s what gets me. It’s just the sheer hypocrisy of everyone, that we all stand on this thing going, “Isn’t that shocking?”
He did say "everyone," so technically, he's not a hypocrite.

Can anyone recall a single public figure who has not caved in when faced with the progressive anti-hate career-destruction political correctness machine?

Just once I'd like someone to stick to his guns and say, screw you, I said what I meant and if you don't like it, tough.

I've lost my respect for Gary Oldman now. Just another lickspittle caving in to the overlords.

Sounds like he said stupid and inappropriate things and probably should apologize. Can't bring myself to read the interview, but if the article is correct he should know better.

Apparently it was the comments about the Jews that got him apologizing all over the place...

The US is dying for a comedian right now who will come out and make fun of homosexuals, muslims, democrats, minorities, etc.

If I had an ounce of talent, I'd be rich.

Uh, it may be less how the left reacts but more how the sponsors do.

Does he have a movie coming out that he's publicizing? This is a good way to play the PC crowd for fools to publicize him.

He's either incredibly canny that way, or a bumbling idiot.

I don't think Oldman is just trying to get back into the good graces of his employers or fans. I think he now realizes he tapped into an ancient trope about the Jews being in control behind the scenes of, well, just about everything. And we all do remember where that led not so very long ago, right?

I don't care about his politics. I love his acting.

Jason Richwine.

He launched a profanity-laced rant in the interview with Playboy, published Monday, about the Hollywood system, calling it a "town run by Jews"

Gasp! Why is pointing out success supposed to be insulting? I rilly don't get it.

Hat tip to He Who Cannot Be Named:

Who runs Hollywood? C'mon
December 19, 2008|JOEL STEIN
"I have never been so upset by a poll in my life. Only 22% of Americans now believe "the movie and television industries are pretty much run by Jews," down from nearly 50% in 1964. The Anti-Defamation League, which released the poll results last month, sees in these numbers a victory against stereotyping. Actually, it just shows how dumb America has gotten. Jews totally run Hollywood.

How deeply Jewish is Hollywood? When the studio chiefs took out a full-page ad in the Los Angeles Times a few weeks ago to demand that the Screen Actors Guild settle its contract, the open letter was signed by: News Corp. President Peter Chernin (Jewish), Paramount Pictures Chairman Brad Grey (Jewish), Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Robert Iger (Jewish), Sony Pictures Chairman Michael Lynton (surprise, Dutch Jew), Warner Bros. Chairman Barry Meyer (Jewish), CBS Corp. Chief Executive Leslie Moonves (so Jewish his great uncle was the first prime minister of Israel), MGM Chairman Harry Sloan (Jewish) and NBC Universal Chief Executive Jeff Zucker (mega-Jewish).
...
As a proud Jew, I want America to know about our accomplishment. Yes, we control Hollywood. Without us, you'd be flipping between "The 700 Club" and "Davey and Goliath" on TV all day."

It's also possible that he's actually a decent guy who realizes, finally, that he sounded (to many people) like an ass. And since many of those people write his paychecks, he figures apologizing is the right thing to do. Not everyone can afford to be a pariah. (What's Mel Gibson doing these days, anyway?)

I actually think "Portlandia" does a great job of skewering uber-progressives, in a friendly way, from the left. It's not a clutch your side cathartic kind of humor, but it does hit the spot at times.

The Feminist Bookstore is absolutely classic. Kumail Nanjiani also plays several characters that send up corporate drones, occasionally with call center overtones due to his ethnicity. One of my favorites was the Birthday Loan Officer - where young couples had to take out a loan to afford the tapas at their friend's birthday party. He crankily responded, "Yes, I know what tapas are, I'm a birthday loan officer."

I don't think it can be done well from the right at the moment, but you never know.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes per Wikipedia (premieres June 28 in Moscow, open July 11 in the U.S.):

"Gary Oldman as Dreyfus, the leader of the surviving humans who wants to kill all the apes and get "revenge" for the deaths of his wife and two sons to the virus."

A actor who by all accounts is easy to work with, always prepared, doesn't cause problems on set and who seems to make movies that make a lot of money? Yeah, I can see why his career is in danger. "I think he now realizes he tapped into an ancient trope about the Jews being in control behind the scenes of, well, just about everything." I dont think he said that. His point ws that everyone in Hollywood throws out slurs including people who are jewish, even if only behind closed doors, but only the slurs targeting jews are punished. Have no idea if that is true or not, but obviously he learned his lesson not to make statements that require nuance to understand.

See on the surface, when white people talk, it always sounds innocent and reasonable enough:

MnMark,

"Just once I'd like someone to stick to his guns and say, screw you, I said what I meant and if you don't like it, tough."

But run their words through TMR's handy-dandy Ted Nugent/Cliven Bundy Subhuman Mongrel White Racism Detection Kit™ and then Viola! - their white words are immediately revealed for the usually despicable, evil historical hate-mongering it is:

eric,

"The US is dying for a comedian right now who will come out and make fun of homosexuals, muslims, democrats, minorities, etc."

And then they wonder why no one else wants to leave the "plantation" and join them?

All I can say is, when it comes to observing the ways of clueless white folks, this place is a goldmine,...

Nah, looks more like a garden-variety craven cave-in to standard-issue bullies abusing their influence to me.

And we all do remember where that led not so very long ago, right?

Drama queen much, Lydia?

You know, we could play "history shows us that behavior x leads to bad y" all day long. A lot of the time, "x" turns out to be the sort of censorious bullying, and sanctions for violations of particular notions of lèse majesté, that you seem to think are such a good idea here.

I'm Jewish on my father's side, and Oldman's comments do not stir even an iota of indignation.

I am more alarmed at the campus BDS movement and the de-legitimization of the State of Israel.

"You declare, my friend; that you do not hate the Jews, you are merely 'anti-Zionist'. And I say, let the truth ring forth from the high mountain tops, let it echo through the valleys of G-D's green earth: When people criticize Zionism, they mean Jews -- this is G-D's own truth."

The only apology warranted was for his profanity. Not necessary for effect, didn't add anything important. I didn't think the comments on Jews were offensive, but they do play to a stereotype so if he felt like he shouldn't have phrased it that way then whether he issues and an apology or not is his business and no one else's.

As a white "privileged" male, I get the brunt of attacks from the left be it on race or sex, and I'm always the enemy. As someone who is not particularly religious but who is not an atheist I can see the attacks on chrstians from the left, which are, to put it mildly really obnoxious and hateful. Dare I say go so far as hate speech.
If it were a case of the You Tube Video that set off the muslim world, the attacks on christianity are far worse and more consistent.
If you watch any black comedian they have no problem making fun of white people dancing and talking and being all around uncool. Eddie Murphy in more than one movie can dress in yellow face or white face to present stereotypical jews, whites and asians.
And I'm ok with all of that. So I don't want to hear from the left about trigger warning or code racial speech or outright racial speech.

You want to insult gays, whites, blacks, women. Have at it. Just as they can insult the patriarchy, the racist whites (hey Crack,I'm referring to you) the evil white bigots, the rich fat cats etc.

Some on the left think there should be protected classes, but those not in those classes are free targets. It doesn't work that way.

Let me get this straight - he rants against political correctness saying people need to stop being offended, and then when people get offended he apologizes for not being politically correct?

This is totally about the JDL and that moron who runs it. Not about Oldham.

Look. What if a lot of the folks running Hollywood are Jews?

Just as thieves or rapists or such who happen to be black resent, when caught, that it should be thought that all blacks are thieves, rapists, etc., gays or such who happen to be Jews resent the imputation that all Jews are faggy, etc.

Happily, from my point of view, there are Jews who are in power with the ability to make their feelings felt by others. Not primarily in America but certainly throughout Europe for millennia, Jews have been put upon in ways large and small. Lacking even the respect garnered by the Muslims who fought off Christianity and a bit more in the middle ages, Jews are conscious of a vulnerable history, which of course culminated in the 1933-1945 era with some resurgence to date.

But now the Jew has teeth, has wishes and the means of fulfilling them, is capable of responding to provocation. The Muslim will rape and kill you if you offend him. The Jew will merely have you fired and bankrupted.

The Christian used to protect his prerogatives, but has abandoned this, partly because in the past he overreached, partly because of the long march through the institutions.

I would certainly encourage my Christian friends to stand up for themselves. I don't propose the Jews should stop, though at the margins there may be excesses, as at the margins there always are. The Muslims...if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything?

(Atheists, as always, can be ignored, sorry fellas.)
