At the Madison Café...

... we're still walking, but don't look too closely.

"Shame." "It's About Freedom." "RAT."

"Blame Wall Street/No Concessions." "Time to REBOOT the GOP Legislature." "Don't take my rights/Leaders Lead, Cowards Dictate/Solidarity!!!!"

I gotta say, I don't get the "It's About Freedom" line.

Lombardi Chick said...

Yeah, that stuck right out to me too. More like, "It's About Money...Specifically Yours, In My Pocket".

Aside from the trash in the windows, that's a gorgeous old building, perhaps made of local sandstone, quarried at Hoyt Park.

What building is that and what is its history?

Why be afraid of signs in the window?

Recent elections showed high voter turnout. This was very unusual.

Even if you don't want to read the signs, you should be able to count the numbers.

My mom always said you get more with honey than you do with vinegar.

Other thing to notice? CLEAN STREETS! WASHED WINDOWS! Even if people inside are just tenants. They're taking pride.

And, it's very American to express your views.

How come no one has called out Obama on his "Made in America" remark?

You would think anyone that smart would know that it is the country - U.S.A. - that is required to be identified on the product labels, not the continent, and at that, North or South America would need to be specified, if that was wanted.

edutcher said...

Nice set, Madame. Of photos.

Were you and Meade alone or did you have a Ranger squad riding shotgun as you strolled past enemy HQ?

Carol_Herman said...

Oh, Hagar, for the same reason no one is calling out Bachmann for some of her remarks. And, religious views.

We live in a world of live, and let live.

Why do people who wouldn't vote for obama expect those who did to do "call outs?"

I still think Obama has the Jack Benny advantage. The guy who never cracked a smile. Who made it look that even his wallet was constipated. And, he never said much. He just held his chin. And, he rocked! (Don Rickles would give him special attention, to just make him laugh. Benny never did. Not once.) Everyone used to be in awe of Jack Benny.

After all "Poppy" Bush was ridiculed by the MSM for being puzzled by a beta version grocery check-out device being tried out in the store he visited.

The "Made in USA" label has been around since the 1930's anyway, and I have never seen a "Made in America" label. You would thing a President of the United States would be familiar with the usage.

Or his special Canadian bus?

Bayoneteer said...

Oh boy. Here in Ann Arbor whole cars drive around completely covered in bumper stickers of that ilk. Many still have Impeach Bush! If slogans were a solution to anything we'd have a utopia here.

Chuck66 said...

What do these sort of people do for a living? Where doest their money come from? If they hate free enterprise, how do they expect Big Government to get its funding?

LakeLevel said...

"REBOOT the GOP Legistature"

This is why you should call it "The Democrat Party", they really aren't very democratic.

Hagar said...

The "Canadian busses" may qualify as "Made in USA", since the furnishings (and the armoring?) were installed in this country.

And to this White House, it may not matter anyway, since it is all the same union, here and in Canada, so that Ford Town Car-Grand Marquis-Crown Victoria's qualify as "American made."
Union membership trumps nationality!

I really appreciate signs like those.

They tell me what places to avoid when I shop.

@OMike at 1010, neither do I. Freedom from Union demands?

The signs that are in the Capitol windows really detract from the beauty of the building (Maybe the signs are gone now). The signs in these photos are pretty easy to ignore.

Beautiful old stone in that building.

I've mentioned it here before, but my favorite sticker seen in Madison is "Bumper Stickers Are Not The Answer".

No shortage of that in Madison too.

Interesting our gov now wants to "work together", after they seen what happened in the recalls. And the gov in Ohio went from "if you're not on the bus you get run over", to "hey let's talk about this". Who votes for these fools is anyones guess.

Garage -

After you win the legislative battle, you reach across the aisle. It's not complicated. Plus, Republicans, unlike Democrats, do not need perpetual anger to keep their supporters in line.

Chip S. said...

I'm most disturbed by the "RAT" sign. The "Freedom" sign is just illogical, but the RAT sign is an attempt to dehumanize the opposition.

Godwin's Law restrains me from drawing any historical parallels.

traditionalguy said...

Is the whole town of Madison inhabited by Mobys?

There seem to be no civil communications except coming from The Professor, Meade and Caplight.

Where's the RECALL WALKER sign?

Sofa King said...

I hope this is not a public office building.

Hagar said...

I do wonder just how those busses got bought and decked out like that.

If I were the Republican candidate, I would inform the Secret Service that I did not wish to see either of them anywhere near either me or my campaign, and that if I won, I would make them sell them on e-bay!

I saw one of those cars covered with bumper stickers in Orange County a couple of years ago. Crappy old car. I wonder if the ones in Ann Arbor and Madison are all Priuses.

Chuck66 said...

Yup. An old propaganda tactic. Jews were rats. African-Americans were monkeys. Japanese were...something. Republicans are rats.

"Who votes for these fools is anyones guess"

On the other hand, we know who is voting for the fools on the other side.

"Who votes for these fools is anyones guess."

People who realize that if we don't live within our means, the whole thing collapses around us.

To echo SofaKing,

these signs had better not be displayed from a public employee's office. Those employees' freedom of speech does not include using the public's money and resources (like offices and windows) to fight partisan political battles.

Good eye. It reminds me a little of Main St. at Disneyland.

I doubt it's public office space, it's across the street from the Capitol, above the Old Fashioned (a great restaurant).

My guess is that it's a lobbyist's office, or an apartment.

That would be interesting, if it was true. But Walker has been saying this since he was elected. As a matter of fact during all the BRB crap he spoke of the bipartisan stuff they had already accomplished.

Some Priuses, but also a lot of crappy old cars driven by hippies and students.

Walker was nice enough to wait until after the recalls to begin the pay deductions from state workers. Credit where credit is due.

Well, I'm really bummed by the news that Sammy Llanas has left the BoDeans. Probably not important to most, but I have really enjoyed watching the band perform over the years, and they have a bunch of really great songs. I watched them back when they played at my high school, and numerous times at Summerfest and up in the Twin Cities over the years.

Nuts.

I believe that window is in a stairwell leading to the 3rd floor (private) office building. The rest of that 2nd floor, I believe, is the 2nd floor of the Old Fashion.

Carol_Herman said...

So: Old Fashioned is a restaurant.

And, the window above the lobby, on the 2nd floor is where the signs are posted.

That means the restaurant's not worried about losing any business.

Since anyone walking into the restaurant, or waiting outside for friends to come by. Isn't offended at all by the signs.

Juxtaposed by what you could lose by posting political opinions ... America'a a better place for this.

See what happens when you get the Muhammad bomb head turban in a window. Pretty much forbidden speech in Europe, isn't it?

Carol_Herman said...

You know what's missing?

HELP WANTED signs.

HELP WANTED signs were once popular signs to put in store windows.

(You know, now? If you go into a retail shop and inquire about a job opening, you're told to fill out an application on the Internet.)

MadisonMan said...

The Old Fashioned is two floors now? Wow, they've expanded since I was there last (which was probably four years ago).

That restaurant is within walking distance of thousand of state employees, not to mention the poor and downtrodden weekend re-enactors. Judge Prosser and Scott Walker are definitely in the minority in those parts. The owners wouldn't dare bite the hand that feeds them.

Calypso Facto said...

"The owners wouldn't dare bite the hand that feeds them."

There are at least 3 restaurants and 1 coffee shop in Madison that lost my business by displaying the pro-fisting sign. But you're right that I'm vastly outnumbered in this socialist enclave.

They ought to think of those extra "pay deductions" as a "tax increase." Not only should they be excited and happy about them, it's their patriotic duty to pay it down the deficit!

Maybe if they bargain themselves a nice juicy raise they can feed the rats to the cats and the cats to the rats and get the catskins for nothing!

Last Tuesday I saw some guy walking around the capitol and yelling, "Recall Walker!" No one cared or paid attention.

More interestingly, Wisconsin may have some of the most attractive farm land in the nation and the 12 year old cheddar was sublime.
