Wow, I had a friend who looked (and talked) just like that.

Will the plague of gymnastic bunnies on bikes mocking damsels in distress never end?!?!

Just when I thought it was safe to watch tv... How can I put this? (This seems urgent, though I may be the last one to see it.)

The horror!

"When you love so long
That the thrill is gone
And your kisses at night
Are replaced with tears
And when your dreams are on
A train to train wreck town
Then I ask you now, what's a girl to do?"

Just for starters, I might suggest she stop looking at music videos. But that might just be me speaking?

Put a picture to words or music, and, all of a sudden, we narrow imagination.

That seems to me to be a crime of humanity.

LOL Poor Obama.

Hey Whip It is out this weekend and I am having a Donnie Darko moment!

Penny said...

In support of Althouse,

Her pictures need no words, no music.

They stand alone.

I, for one, am impressed.

Penny said...

In charge?

Whewwwwwwwwww!

You wouldn't mind if i squeeZed you nuts, would you?

;)

Thought not.

Honey? I have a yen for speaking tonight! Can you forgive me for not being Yapanese?

Unfortunately, Largo...

You have lost me here, Penny.

She sings OK and apparently can sing if a live performance wasn't processed. I guess the rest of the music is OK if you like that kind of stuff.

However, the bikes bit is probably going to end up being as much a joke in the future as this is now. Especially note the wimpy bunny hops and the guy on her left who's more than a bit tentative about going hands-free. And, seriously, isn't bunnies on bikes just a stupid novelty? The recent Britney video seems like it will hold up more than bunnies on bikes.

Plus, I'd like to see one of her bunnies do some of the things here, and for biking/walking while singing that holds up a couple decades later, try this and this.

Since FNSF has been declared, this video - involving not singing while biking but while beating a drum and walking - is pretty good as long as you don't know what she's singing.

Fred4Pres said...

Lonedot...the bike clip was wild. My eight year old watched it seriously and said "They are professionals." 10,000 Maniacs was great too.

I did not care for that Kate Bush so much, but I did like this one when it first came out.

Shouldn't those people be wearing helmets, and not animal heads?

The Psychedelic Furs
Heartbreak Beat.

I'm a heartbreak beat
Yeah, all night long
And nobody don't dance
On the edge of the dark
We've got the radio on
And it feels like love
But it don't mean a lot
And it feels like love
And it's all that we've got

(Chorus)
There's a heartbreak beat
Playing all night long
Down on my street
And it feels like love
Got the radio on
And it's all that we need
There's a heartbreak beat
And it feels like love
There's a heartbreak beat
And it feels like love

Talk Talk
It's My Life

Funny how I find myself in love with you
If I could buy my reasoning I'd pay to lose
One half won't do
I've asked myself
How much do you commit yourself?

It's my life
Don't you forget
It's my life
It never ends

Funny how I blind myself
I never knew if I was sometimes played upon
Afraid to lose,
I'd tell myself what good you do
Convince myself
.

* I assume, based on the comments, this is a "FU if you aren't Hungarian" song.

* This one however doesn't appear to be bellicose.

* From the pagan side of things, I think this must be a Dutch thing, because I don't get it at all.

* Here's some old Allmans.

* 60 Minutes on the Grateful Dead and those hippies.

* And, something funny looking.

Suddenly Last Summer.

It happened one summer, it happened one time
It happened forever, for a short time
A place for a moment, an end to dream
Forever I loved you, forever it seemed

One summer never ends, one summer never began
It keeps me standing still, it takes all my will
And then suddenly last summer

Sometimes I never leave, but sometimes I would
Sometimes I stay too long, sometimes I would
Sometimes it frightens me, sometimes it would
Sometimes I'm all alone and wish that I could
.

What stylistic devices/techniques/approaches does Kubrick use?

Kubrick uses symmetry to achieve two very specific effects: firstly, to lull an audience into a sense of false security, and secondly, to parody or counterpoint the ensuing chaos, the asymmetrical destruction. Danny's extravagant tricycle-rides around the hotel are repeated several times as joyride, rollercoaster, guided tour. Just when we think we've seen the ride, he sets off on another one, a tricycle trip too many yawn... and WHUMP! The wheels stop, the little feet falter on the pedals. Suddenly we have a spooky pair of twin girls, a liftshaft full of blood, a man wearing a sinister rabbit mask -- just when we thought we were getting a bit bored with all this tricycle riding.

And I cry cos youre not here

Crying in my head again
And I know that its not clear

Put your hands, put your hands
Inside my face and see that its just you
(Althouse revisited her wild child years)
But its bad and its mad
And its making me sad
Because I cant be with you

Splits a family in two

Watching some good friends
Scream "Let me out!"
Pray tomorrow takes me higher

Sting / Jobim Duet

How Insensitive .

How insensitive
I must have seemed
When she told me that she loved me
How unnerved and cold
I must have seemed
When she told me so sincerely
Why she must have asked
Did I just turn and stare in icy silence
What was I to say?
What can you say
When a love affair is over?
Why she must have asked
Did I just turn and stare in icy silence
What was I to say?
What can you say
When a love affair is over?
So now she's gone away
And I'm alone
With a memory of her last look
Vague and drawn and sad
I see it still
All the heartbreak in her last look
How she must have asked,
Could I just turn and stare in icy silence
What was I to do?
What can one do
When a love affair is over
.

Thank you for that video, Professor. It was enjoyable to watch and it reminded me that I recently lost one of those little black end-plug thingies that go into the open end of my handlebars.

What's a President to do:

A sense of stunned bewilderment suffused Air Force One and the White House. Only after the defeat did many advisers ask questions about the byzantine politics of the Olympic committee. Valerie Jarrett, the president’s senior adviser and a Chicago booster who persuaded him to make the trip while at the United Nations last week, had repeatedly compared the contest to the Iowa caucuses.

But officials said the administration did not independently verify Chicago’s chances, relying instead on the Chicago 2016 committee assertions that the city had enough support to finish in the top two. Mr. Obama, Michelle Obama, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Ms. Jarrett worked the phones in recent weeks without coming away with a sense of how behind Chicago really was.

knox said...

Fred,

I follwed that link. This is OT, but I just have to say that I am creeped out by all the signs and other paraphernalia that is belched out for any Obama-related effort. They all have that same look as the Obama campaign materials. They pulled them out to counter the tea parties and to push for Obamacare, and now, even for the Olympics.

It's gross. There seems to be a big orchestrated marketing campaign behind everything Obama wants.

It's almost as if they know his ideas and efforts can't get the job done alone...

Richard Fernandez has a different take on the issue.

Ironic that Chicago did not supply enough baksheesh.

I loved this part:

...the story itself is really a test. Those who tell it are testing to see if you believe it. If you believe it and come forward groveling then they’ll tell you another story about Santa Claus. You’ve failed the test because then they’ve got you pegged for a chump. But if you reject it, then you might just possibly be someone worth dealing with; a person who at least had the wit to see the truth and hear the jungle screams across the manicured lawns.
