"Will Iran's 'Marriage Crisis' Bring Down Ahmadinejad?"

He's getting blamed for the inability of young adults to marry.

Whatever it takes.

Oh, right, Obama will fix the problem and the gay Iranians will be able to get married. What?

In a media-world where everything is spin, what the hell is this asinine thumbsucker of a story covering up/distracting from?

My view is that this is the tip of the iceberg in Iran. The ruling Mullahs have had an increasing problem with controlling the youth in the country. They grew up in this Shi'a theocracy, and see that the grass is greener throughout much of the rest of the world. The justification for the theocracy, the late Shah, was deposed and dead before many of them were born.

Ahmadinejad has made things worse for them on a number of fronts, including this one. Not only has he effectively destroyed their economy, he has also made them a pariah of the rest of the world through his nuclear militarism.

Compounding this is the problem that Iraq, next door, is a functioning (better than Iran) Shi'a dominated democracy without having the Shiite clergy actively running the country. Instead, many Iraqis (and now Iranians) are led by Iranian born Grand Ayatollah Sistani, who essentially preaches secular democratically elected government.

Of course, the Iranian youths need to be careful of how they protest. Ahmadinejad and the rulling Mullahs have been brutal shutting down dissent. But this protest doesn't attack the mullahs directly, and so is much safer.

Funny, that was my thought after reading a few paragraphs in.

I recommend that to make housing affordable, Ahmadinejad start two government-owned corporations, Fatemeh Mana, and Farrokh Majid, to make low cost loans to low wage earners. There's no way that could lead to trouble.

As long as Iran ALSO makes sure those lenders using Fatemah & Farrokh guarantees can't discriminate economically - i.e, banks HAVE to lend to minorities whether their credit qualifies them or not. That's the only way to achieve unprecedented levels of home ownership, which is always good, right?

What will happen in Iran when the real estate bubble bursts? If people cannot afford places to live, eventually demand does not meet supply and prices collapse.

"The President flooded the economy with capital through a loan scheme, cut interest rates 2% and embarked on huge state construction projects that drove up the price of building materials."

There's a lesson in there, Barack.

(Good post, formerlawstudent.)

Eventually the Mullahs will be out in Iran, but in the short term I would not count on it.

To me this looks more like the right situation for a sexual revolution than any other kind. The government will probably go along with it, too, in the interest of self-preservation.

I was looking forward to a long, interesting discussion here, but after FLS posted his masterpiece, well... there's not much else to say, is there?

What really frightens me about the whole situation is that Iran, being so unstable, may also soon become a nuclear weapons state. Check out this video (http://tinyurl.com/n4tmjy) to learn more.
