I'm on the radio in a few minutes.

I'm on the "Week in Review" show with Joy Cardin on Wisconsin Public Radio at 8 AM Central Time this morning. That's 9 AM ET.

Go here to listen on-line live. Call in. We'll be talking about whatever news stories of the last week people want to talk about. And you'll be able to listen to the archived show here, later.

The other guest is Paul Soglin. You know who he is.

He's on the left, so I'm on the right.

With regard to the "race card" issue - see this. Obama himself is the one playing the race card.

When is Joy going to get Uncle Jimbo to play the right side of the show so that Ann isn't being labelled the conservative?

Damn when Soglin dies, they could stuff him and mount him for display in a museum as a prototypical liberal Democrat. He basically believes only Republicans can play the race card. And they do that by simply campaigning in white areas such as Racine/ Kenosha county!

Ann please bring up the tire inflation issue?

Soglin really came over as an utter tool in that answer about moderate democrats. Paul: speaking slowly doesn't by itself confer gravitas.

Ann, did anyone check for a pulse on this guy? Maybe it was a long van ride from the home and they had to get him up too early.

Will the fact that women over 40 see through Obama be discussed on progressive radio?

Ohio is a "Republican State" and it's significant that McCain is having to spend resources there? Last time out, Bush got 2.8 million to Kerry's 2.7 million. It was 2.3 and 2.18 in 2000. Clinton won it twice. Try again.

Obama's recent comments on race are the biggest mistake of his campaign. Now we know how Obama really feels about white people. Obama is no different than Jessie Jackson.

What is even more pathetic is the NY Times carrying water for him trying to claim that McCain's Britanny Spears ad was racist.

What a joke.

Simon said...

He doesn't seem to understand what a free market is, either.

The Spears/Hilton ad fails because it attempts to draw a comparison of similarities between Obama and Spears/Hilton as celebrities devoid of substance. Spears and Hilton are both famous for being mindless. Obama, whatever his policy faults, is clearly not mindless. Because the comparison of Obama and Hilton/Spears fails at the most basic level, the viewer is left to grasp for meaning in the far more obvious contrasts.

The ad did not fail. The inclusion of Spears and Hilton brought attention to the ad because it was over the top. Because people paid attention, people pondered the message that maybe Obama is loved because he is a celebrity and not for anything else.

Obama's rock star image is starting to hurt him.

Also Obama's new annoucement that he was going to give "working people" $1000 that he would get from taxing oil companies is bound to fail. Who will Obama go after next? Will it be banks, Wal*Mart, will it be the company you work for?

As the Wall Street Journal editorial today implies, someone needs to grow up despite being "older than the hills" and someone else needs to get over himself. Frankly, it reminds me of elementary school when the teacher had to remind her charges to "Play nicely" or not at all.

Prof. Althouse,

Just curious, because you are placed on the program as a "conservative", do you find yourself more inclined to take up or stand up for the conservative argument? Do you find yourself making the conservative argument because when you are on the program with the liberal Soglin you (regardless of your actual physical location) find yourself in the Madison milieu? Or are you just speaking from your own perspective? Again, just curious.

"Benjamin Franklin... The only President of the United States who was never President of the United States" - Firesign Theatre

Ha! And Thomas Jefferson is on the $2 bill, another random dead guy that doesn't look like Barack Obama for unspecified reasons. (Though both have been rumored to sleep with black women.)

I reckon the caller was correct about U.S. Grant, though I guess I don't see those very often, myself, either.

too many jims: I did feel that it was necessary to articulate the McCain side of things, but I did also criticize him. When I do this show I am always (or maybe only almost always) paired with someone who will promote liberals and assail conservatives, and without being untrue to my own opinions, I want to provide a strong balance.

Sloan, there isn't any question that the McCain campaign's strategy on offense is to paint Obama as all bun and no meat (or there's no there there). It's also clear that this is what the ad aimed to do. I agree that it was successful in generating buzz, but it's too easy to dismiss the substance of the claim when the analogy was so poorly constructed.

Of course, if an aim of the ad was to bait Obama into playing a race card, then perhaps it was more successful than I thought.

Prof. Althouse,

Thank you for the resposne. I hadnot meant to suggest that I thought you were beingan apologist for McCain. It just struck me in the discussion of the Paris/Spears ad that you made a better argument for its ratonale than any I had heard from a McCain supporter much less surrogate. Specifically that the ad recognizes voters attraction to Obama but urges them to examine his experience.
regards.

DAMN! I missed another live call-in. But even in retrospect, I knew Simon would be on top of the situation.

Do you guys remember when he called in into the radio show, and with that Scots purr of his, challenged another liberal about FDR's military record?

(She claimed that since he was Asst. Secretary of the Navy, that counted as military experience. HAH)

Shame that Ann is probably given as much of a heads-up about radio contributions, than we are.

Cheers,
Victoria

I'm almost positive Ann will end up voting for Obama.

It's because she is a moderate liberal, that she gets tagged as 'conservative' on NPR.

And that's too bad.

Victoria - Scots accent? I offer the podcast I did on National Coalition v. Henry as evidence of my generic mid-south England accent.

I remember that call you're referring to, that was quite amusing. But I should put out that I didn't call in to correct her assertion about FDR. When you call in to these show, while you're waiting you can hear the program, and while I was on hold waiting to go on the air, this woman - can't remember who! - made some jejune point about Bush and Cheney not having served in the military and thus being ill-qualified to be commander in chief. And when Joy put me on the air, I thought that before getting to the question I was going to ask, I'd rebut that by pointing out that neither FDR nor Lincoln had military experience. And her comeback, as you say, was to claim that of course FDR had military experience, which I thought was totally preposterous and said so.

Call me a mindless optimist if you will, but I trust her judgment.

Victoria, go to the link for the archive. You can listen to the show now.

Hey I just listened to this and I have to say that this Soglin dude is boring enough to be a star on Blogging Heads.

I see Barak is now offering me a $1,000 bribe to vote for him. Getting desperate you worthless scum?

Is that okay, Victoria? Or is it racist to call a worthless scum a worthless scum if he's a black worthless scum? I'm sure you'll set me straight, little miss vicious goody too shoes.

ricpic said...

Vicious little miss goody TWO shoes. Sorry about the inaccuracy, Vicky.

I'm Full of Soup said...

I like the way these "bribes" by politicians are intentionally vague as to who will be eligible and who will be excluded because they earn too much.

It's what the grifters do in carnival shell games.

TJ said...

Ricpic, no matter how many rocks you throw at Victoria, I don't think she'll date you, pal.

I'm Full of Soup said...

Try tugging on her pigtails.

Linky no worky.

Ann Althouse said...

Hey, why did it take until 4 for someone to notice the bad link? Doesn't anyone care who PS is?

blake said...

I slept in. Sorry.

And, I did edit the link so that I got where it's currently pointing, but it's about someone named Joy Cardin.

So I remain confused. Unless Paul Soglin used to be Joy Cardin! What a twist that would turn out to be!

I want to tax the rich, Sloanasaurus, and Simon, because they think the poor and middle class should pay for the war in Iraq and Homeland Security. The rich have their secret Swiss bank accounts and their luxury yachts and generally don't work much, and mostly live off other's labor. Sitting pretty, Cindy McCain, comes to mind, and her $6,000,000 annual paycheck for fixing her hair and makeup routinely. It's the good life; you can't beat it.

I love how the term "free market" is bandied about by people who oppose Headstart and free school lunches for poor elementary school kids. There is nothing free at my local market when I go shopping there except for a free sample of chicken salad at the deli counter. It was too salty for my tastes, so I passed on it.

Yes, I did listen to the talk show and I thought Althouse was more original and sensible than the other guy. Althouse usually doesn't delve too much into areas beyond her fields of expertise, other than making pithy observations. She recognizes her talents and emphasizes them, to her credit.
