That's a nice view out your windows. Enjoy the city.

The noise pollution, the cement suite, soot, personality conflicts, crowds, and crime.

You'll love it!

Ugh.

Well, to each her own. Hope you enjoy it.

Great view.

Give me a fashionable Manhattan condo and a weekend place in Long Island and I'm on my way.

Post some pictures, but I assume we'll see more people and less flowers.

The first things anyone living in this stinkhole city thinks when they see something like this video is:

I hate her. She has a balcony. I wonder if it's possible to calculate square footage using a still image...

Ann Althouse said...

Yeah, I knew it was hate-inspiring.

I pretended I didn't know

Ann Althouse said...

But I knew.

AJD: You obviously didn't watch the video, you loser.

No, New York is where I'd rather stay.

I get allegic smelling hay.

I just adore a penthouse view.

Darling I love you but give me Park Avenue.

Fresh Air!

"We'll enjoy the laughs! Be careful Annie!!"

Is that a threat?

I love that you think you're a real urbanite. Um, just because you moved from Left Testicle, CO to Williamsburg 6 years ago, like waay before it was really cool doesn't make you an urbanite, girlfriend.

Don't worry, AJD, you'll have an actual erection someday. Then maybe the girls won't laugh at you anymore.

Times Square!

A real Freudian slip! I first typed: "Don't worry, AJD, you'll have an actual rejection someday."

I'm sure AJD already has plenty of experience with rejection.

We now go live to our New York correspondent Ann Althouse...

As Mike said, not my cup of tea, and since I can't say "welcome" (not living there) I'll say best wishes. :)

Did you see the cow on the neighboring building?

Do they have scrapple there?

Where is Silvio?

Peter Hoh said...

Here's to a great year commenting from a new locale.

Cheers!

Palladian said...

Keep jerkin' it, AJD, you'll get the little fella to respond some day.

Oh, and welcome to my borough Althouse.

Ann Althouse said...

Thanks, Palladian. Let's get together soon.

Ann Althouse said...

I'm sick of AJD. I'm going to delete everything he wrote here and everything he ever writes in the future. He's pointless.

Ann Althouse said...

And thanks for all the good wishes.

Brooklyn Heights!! Columbia Terrace?

Hope you have good air conditioning.

But you'll only need it for a month or so.

Ann, I hope you venture out from your lofty perch in the Ivory Tower ..to see the great neighborhoods of Brooklyn..check out Park Slope which should feel pretty familar to someone from Madison (cause you can't swing a dead cat and not hit 20 superduper liberals, feminists and assorted Madison Wisc types)...the great Arab restaurants and shops on lower Atlantic Ave near Henry and Clinton St (Shardi's for spices and food to fill your kitchen)...and the cool Carib joints further up Atlantic which are both wihtin easy walking distance (Brawta cafe, great jerked chicken)..the boho atmosphere of the hipster sections of Williamsburg where you can pretend to be a beatnick (and get a steak at Peter Lugers)..... First Saturday at the Brooklyn Museaum on Eastern Parkway ( live bands, dancing, and great art)...fantastic Italian food in my home base of Carroll Gardens...The Russian enclave in Brighton Beach and Sheepshead Bay( great nightclubs like Rasputin for the Russian Mafia experiance)...the really different vibe of Hasidic Bourough Park...Sweet soul food and BBQ in do or die Bed Stuy...You can find the whole world in just a few blocks of Brooklyn...welcome and enjoy.

Welcome to the great North East or so I've heard.

Change is good.
The view looks great.
You'll fit in way too smoothly.
Come back -- we're good enough out here, in the Midwest.

Aren't we?

Ann Althouse said...

Trooper: Thanks for all the tips. You know, I lived in Park Slope for 2 years, back in the early 80s. I'm interested in seeing how it's changed.

Ann Althouse said...

Thanks, Nina. I have to force myself not to think of all the things about Madison that I want to have here... starting with indie coffeehouses, but also little things, like the way the milk tastes and how easy it is to buy ordinary things that you happen to need.

MadisonMan said...

Can you get milk in glass bottles in NYC? It makes all the difference tastewise.

amba said...

There's nothing -- NOTHING -- you can't get in NYC if you have the time to look for it and the money to pay for it.

MadisonMan said...

Can you get a nice view of the entire sky, including the Milky Way, just by laying on your back and looking up?

At first, I wondered whether someone else was in the room -- there was a shadow of a woman holding out her arms -- and then it became clear that it was your reflection in the picture on the back wall, while you held the camera pointing back at yourself. The shadow kept popping in and out of the image as you moved the camera around. What used to be a painter's clever conceit is now just an accident of technology. Paul Auster (a Park Slope guy) has played with that house-of-mirrors idea too. Watching your vlog reminded me of a scene in one of his NY Trilogy novellas, set not far from your BLS dorm on Pierrepont Street.

On Montague St., there's a used book store (Heights Books). I go there often, as well as the Strand. It's just narrow walkways and crammed shelves, books everywhere. No place for a vlog or a blog, but nice anyway. One of the fellows usually behind the counter (Richard Bernstein) is an adjunct prof at NYLS, as well as the author of a nice short bio of Jefferson. Perhaps I'll see you there sometime during your year here, or at the Queen (the best local Italian on Court St., a real BLS spot and deservedly popular with Hts residents) or one of the places on Smith St.

Anyway, welcome to Brooklyn.

I ended up spending $50 on cabs to go to Bed, Bath and Beyond on 6th Avenue, where I actually did find everything I was looking for -- beginning with down pillows -- and got a good price -- enough to offset the cab ride. (And I know I could have taken the subway in (though not out).) Back in Madison, BB&B is an ordinary big box store that you drive right up to, so it was a little annoying to have to make such a special trip of it, but it really had everything I needed.

Ann, Park Slope has changed alot since you were there, so if you want to fit in you should buy a pair of Croc's and prepare to breast feed at the table...while bitching about the food coop and the cyclists in Prospect Park...if you want to get a real sense of the various neighborhoods in brooklyn...check out brooklynian.com and follow the threads for your paticular interests.
